While its probably more that Willis O Brian just messed up a little, its a happy accident that it gives Kong a unique look; like how Godzilla's was intended to be a dinosaur but the deviations gave him a distinct look. Whether that was intentional or not is anyone's guess but we can see what a "normal" Willis O Brian gorilla would look like with Mighty Joe Young. Neca's is a unique take but it still owes a lot to the 33 look.
