Which means that if you want to build a toy that catches a kid's attention it's very easy to take advantage of the fact that the kid's attention is already on the phone. Make the toy interact with the phone.
It also means it's easier to maintain a kid's interest in the toy since it interacts with his favorite attention drain device.
The phone is today's window through which we see the world.
Those thoughts aside, it's getting very worrying - I'm seeing a lot of young parents now all around and they're all absolutely handing their phones/tablets/you name it smart device to their very young (1-2-3-4+ year old) children because it's very easy and convenient. Parenting is hard, having your kid glued to a device? Not so hard.
These kids grow up with phones, and the importance and nostalgia you associated with a beloved childhood toy they associate with a phone. That's why the phone is now tied into toys.
