As a result, they were depicted as being a jumble of the scariest animals the artists or writers describing them could think of; the modern interpretation of a dragon is a combination of predatory cat, snake, and eagle (the top three predators that used to prey on us when we were just monkeys and thus illicit a primordial fear response in most people) - a feline torso with avian talons, serpentine head, neck and tail, avian wings. The design has since been streamlined to be more cohesive, with the fur removed, feathers (usually) plucked from the wings, beaks (usually) removed, and the whole thing covered in scales to emphasize the reptilian aspect, but it's still there. A quick Google search of Medieval Dragons will show you just how wild the combinations were over the ages - some even had human heads!
