When people say they are into D&D it's like saying they are into Marvel Comics but it turns out they only like X-Men, and even then only the Jim Lee era so it's a hard sell when D&D fans are really just into Critical Role, Faggotlance, or Baldurs gate.
Personally I think the line should have leaned into the monsters since they are the common denominator.
