I'll fiddle around and then start playing things out in my head and the ideas start coming. Sometimes a movie or TV show or book will have a scene that inspires me. Other times I get the idea from seeing a location I like. I very rarely go out and shoot without having planned the shots or "story" firsthand. I take a lot of shots at home as test shots or "concept art" before doing it on location. Pic related is an example.
