The channels can exist in perpetuity, there's no anonymity, it more often than not ends up being an echo chamber, and whether you like it or not it does, in fact, siphon potential discussion from the thread. There is a legitimate reason it is called a thread killer. If it was used only as an external utility and not a separate mode of communication, we wouldn't be feeling the effects of it, and I think you would see far less people complaining about it. You can bitch and moan about others bitching and moaning if you want, but they are absolutely within the right to want it gone.
