Same exact issue as a kid, I think everyone kinda did. There were some cool repaints or variants sometimes but I feel like mostly everybody just wanted a NORMAL nom-gimmicked figure of their favorite characters.
For me, it was the toybiz Ben Reilly, TAS Iron Man, and Superboy that satiated my wants for a normal figure. Had Water Wars Wolverine cause it was the coolest looking Wolverine without a gimmick at the time, but he ended up getting stolen.
