The issue is turning a gun into a robot that looks exactly like a lazy cartoon model sheet from 1984. MP-36 set a new standard for unnecessarily complex transformations, and also including fake parts to emulate the nonsensical morphing that happened in the show, which is why Megatron's chest isn't actually made from the side shaft of the gun, and Sunstreaker's chest isn't actually made from the roof of the car. At that point, why not just make an action figure, make a scale model car, and sell them together in the same box? Hell, plenty of collectors buy toys twice anyway so they can display in both modes simultaneously.
