Because the joint is positioned closer to the center, it doesn't have that gap for the knee, but the joint looks bigger, and the leg does not bend as far. The sculpt hits each other compared to when the joint is off center closer to the side the joint bends.
To get a better bending of the knees with this style you need to take a chunk out of the back of the knees, and that doesn't look so great either.
