I followed advice and first applied gloss varnish before the decals, but it has partially filled up the delicate panel lines. They weren't gone, but considerably less noticeable than before. I used vallejo acrylic gloss that I diluted roughly 1:1.
After decals were done, I tried to do a dark wash just for the panel lines and they wouldn't "take" at all. All I did was make the model itself look dirty and grimy. underside looks less like an actually plane that's weathered, and more like a model that someone dropped into engine oil and tried to clean up.
