I decided to check the other mech for how deep the screws should be screwed in. As it turns out the ones on the model with the gap weren't in nearly enough.
With that in mind, I checked for any leftover nub between the parts and pressed them together (which worked fine) confirming nothing was holding them apart.
I then gently begun screwing both the top and bottom screws tighter, reducing the gap significantly.
I would have kept going but I started hearing a bit of a creak as I turned the bottom screw (along with a lot of added resistance) so I decided to stop and just unwind a tad.
I did the same with the top, unscrewing a bit when I felt it had gone to as far as I was willing to push it.
The result is not perfect, they don't sit completely flush, but it's good enough that I'm happy with it and not willing to risk any more tampering to get better results.
I've attached a picture of the result. Not very evident, and from the front it's impossible to see anyway ( as one of you pointed out).
