You don't necessarily need tan for ass, just rounded slopes, domes, etc. in general. Tan is only really necessary if you're building caucasian characters or characters in khakis, and even then it can be limited by how you're going about things, e.g. what kind of "pants" they're wearing, if any, et cetera.
Some of Zemata's early stuff makes for good examples; he just made do with disks and some bar claw connectors. When he went on to build TrixE, he kept the bar claw connections, but used technic liftarms to integrate nuva shells.
Obviously the disks made for an uglier butt than the shells, but you get the point.
