Mahritoran, Voyatoran, Tohunga and Av-Matorans are all deviations from a Matoran's natural form. Mutated, temporarily altered or weakened. Only the Metrutorans are pure.
The same goes for Toa.
Toa Mangai, Toa Hagah, Toa Metru. Those are what a Toa usually looks like.
The Toa Mata were engineered, rather than being transformed from Matoran to Toa. Thats why the Mata look so weak compared to their healthy counterparts. The Toa Inika were mutated by the Red Star. Deviants. The Toa Mahri are mutants.
