As for fixing it, I'd try: Sanding the flat sides of the peg heads to address the cause of the breakage. File the bottoms of the stems flat, being careful not to remove too much. Hand-drilling holes for a thin pin or nail to run through the stems into the heads. Using an epoxy to join it all together.
