I agree that he had a great, fleshed out character but that's only because the damn show has been running for so long.
A white guy doing a dumb voice he thinks sounds Indian for a laugh is no different than a white guy blacking up because that's what he thinks black people look like, for a laugh. And then they let the guy in black face have some nice character development over 30 years.
Nobody even wanted Apu to be removed from the show, all Fox had to do was hire an actual Indian actor to do the voice and they would win progressive points. It could be the same damn voice but coming from a real Indian guy it would become satire.
