Not to mention the biggest problem with Lego Trains is that there's no cheap way to expand your train roster without either dropping ~$200 on another train set to get more wheels/couplers or going onto Pick-A-Brick or Bricklink and ordering them themselves (As if a kid is going to know to do that). At least with other train brands you can drop $20-40 on a new car for your collection.

Lego is too afraid to go all-in on a Train theme again like during the 12v or 9v eras because of how little train sets actually move off the shelves compared to most themes like Ninjago or Star Wars or other non-train City sets. I think the best thing Lego could potentially do is make a big $100 Creator set in the same vein as the Hobby Trains set they put out in the mid-2000s. That thing shelfwarmed pretty hard sadly, but I think the main issue with it was that you had a huge partscount designed to work with 30 different models of varying quality. Narrow it down to three models (Main model being a Steam tank engine with two freight cars, and the alt builds being a large diesel using all the parts in one thing or a two-car EMU) and I think you have a solid set.

The only hurdle for you might be the ">Not expensive to expand" part but if you hunt around enough you could probably find some parent selling their kid's Lego train stuff at a yard sale or something. That or you could buy bootleg track from AliExpress or something.
