To me, I just see old Generations as their own redesigns and interpretations of the characters so they don't need to look exactly the same as the original cartoon. I do.
Most kids (demographic that typically buy toys) don't really give a shit about how their figures compared to ones in a cartoon that came out before they were born. Transformers has always been about the "robots in disguise" element e.g. weapon placement like the exhaust rocket doors, rocket engine block and the detailed head/taillights. The new ER Wheeljack may look better visually but he's too stiff and lifeless for my liking. The old version feels more 'Transformers' if you know what I mean. It just brings out the figure's personality so much more.
