Licenses are renewed if things go well for the licensee.
Most companies nenew the license up to 3 years before it even expires and most licenses are written to favor the current license holder.
So the fact that Mattel lost the license means that Mattel was already on thin ice when they renewed the license in 2014 or 2015. WB denied Mattel the ability to renew the license in 2017-2019 and allowed the license to lapse. Likely in 2018, WB started shopping the license around to other toy companies and this is when Spin Masters and McFarlane put their bids in.
Toy companies need roughly 2 years time to have a toyline ready for when their license starts.
In short, Mattel is unlikely to ever get the license back, as they squandered and ruined the DC brand for over 10 years by releasing shitty toys
> they have proven to be worthy of making ML like figures again with their Lightyear alpha class and their Pixar Spotlight Series
The Buzzlight year toys are shit. Cheap glossy toys with little to no paint and less articulation than fucking DCUC figures, which were already outdated when they were first released in the mid-00s.
Mattel keeps releasing the same lazy outdated trash year after year, but somehow manages to remain in business somehow.
I blame nostalgiafags who just gobble up this trash regardless of the quality.
