As for the 'simple yet creative' angle, I generally try to get my MOCs to fit in with the official sets - more complex, yet not too much bigger or using too many 'off the wall' building techniques, as it were. I think the most complicated Bionicle figure I've built from CCBS is probably my centaur, but if you look at the skeleton (see pic) he isn't overtly complicated either.
