That's a key point for stability, if that rotation goes even a little bit loose you will never be able to do any wide stances again, it will just buckle. This is why we do not often see this joint style used. Offhand I can only think of a few examples, like Bandai's Fighting Body.
Also, a mid-knee swivel is not the same as a thigh swivel, they don't have the same range of motion. Try to do this pose with a knee swivel, it's impossible. But you can with a thigh swivel.
Thigh swivels are ugly, but they work very well.
