The author makes super depressing/hilarious comics from other walks of life too.
All he's done is taken a random person with something normal people do (yes, people with hobbies are normal) and ramps it up to 13/10 just like most comedies do. The fact he uses a collector is the fact people make comedies about doctors, lawyers, vendors and other shit: write what you know. Writers come from all walks of life, many of which failed at they originally wanted to do. So some guy who writes about a collector, guess what? He's almost 100% a collector too.
