>>10318679FFT does have a lot of characters, but not many of them are super memorable. I think its because characters tend to have a part in the story, then once they join, you never really hear from them again. Like, once Agrias, or Mustadio, or some of the others join, you don't really hear from them (though some of them like Mustadio crop up in some of the late-game sidequests) but they just sort of fade out of the main story.
The game also doesn't really have a central antagonist you're chasing. That shifts around a lot, since the game is filled with double crosses, and backstabbers, and all that political intrigue. The Shrine Knights become the "main antagonists" though you don't even really encounter them until late Chapter 3, which is already getting toward the end of the game.
People have suggested the Zodiac monsters, but considering how big and bulky they are, they'd be cool, but I doubt they'd be likely...
