Bay was always know for his love of of making explosions and gritty militarily style combat scenes, and he would all but have drooled at the idea of doing a air to ground combat of Skystriker against Hiss Tanks or a Snake-eyes stealth operation breaking into a Cobra base to destroy the mass device or something comparable.
Meanwhile Stephen Sommers ability to take absurd ideas and finding the balance between serious and tongue in cheek mix with the understanding you have to keep the cast around the magic of the film's themes (in this case giant robots) which would have made a fantastic Transformers film.
Sadly we live in the timeline where they both directed the wrong film.
