I want to dive into Matoranology for a bit:
>After being stuck in Spheres for many many years, the future Matoran of Mata Nui devolved into smaller ,weaker versions of themselves, who we know as Tohunga,
>The Matoran of Mata Nui (presumably ranging from between 70 to 100 Matorans) were rebuilt before returning to Metru Nui
So these are the facts about our "early" Matorans, who are in fact the latest (d)evolution of Matoran, alongside their cousins of Karzahni/Voya Nui..
Enter Karzahni.
>While his brother chose to make a haven for good Matoran workers, Karzahni chose to take in the bad ones, intending to repair their faults and return them to their homelands.
But we all know Karzahni was insane (and kind of a metaphor for crazy MOCers) and the Matorans weren't repaired but "revamped" instead into smaller, weaker versions.
As far as we knew, what Matorans naturally looked like would be the following:
>Metru-Nui Matoran
Probably the base form of Matoran who lived in the brain of the universe.
We also get a drawing of two Metru Nui Matorans working in the processor core, in one of the comics. So it's fair to assume that they are one of the more common or most common form of our little dudes.
>Southern Continent Matoran
AKA 'Mahri-Nui Matoran'. These guys sport silver torsos and coloured limbs, opposite to their Metru cousins with coloured torsos and colorless limbs. They appear to be about the same height, just with slightly longer arms and legs. Why is this a base Matoran form and not the Mutagen mutation? Simple: the first thing the Mutagen did to the Voya Nui Matoran sinking into the depths was strip them from previous Mutations. Part of that were the "improvements" that Karzahni made, turning them back into their natural form.
>Av-Matoran
This form is what Matorans look like when they are close to Karda Nui, simple as. (correct me if thats wrong.)
