Yes, there were vintage magazines like Scale Modeler, but the standards for the hobby did not change until Paine was involved. Paine worked as a professional model maker, making dioramas for museums and rich collectors, but then he got commissioned by Monogram to make diorama pamplets back in the 70s. These became widely successful, and Paine later went one to write books on military and diorama modelling in the 80s and contributed frequently to Finescale Modeler and Military Modelling magazine.
I think his books are still worth picking up today. They will help in not making your models look boring as fuck.
