Honestly, it seems IDW is flipping between total toy accuracy to current hasbro products to OC material like aspergus (as an excuse to rope in the background characters into the mess), the fact slingshot is dead in the comics helps them get away with this.
I take the comics with a pinch of salt since (from where I've read which isn't much) they appeared after the toys, that and sentinel trump looks nothing like the toy he's based on apart from the head
