Lots of Jap figure collectors have been brainwashed over the last couple of years with steadily raising prices to think that 8k-10k yen is a normal price for a 6-inch action figure, when most of these figures were $30-$50 less than a decade ago and actually came with more stuff.
Couple this with being a die-hard fan of a franchise, and you get people who aren't afraid of spending $300+ aftermarket to get a toy to complete their set.
It isn't much different than those collectors who spend thousands of dollars on huge overpriced polystone statues.
