The first week or so was just going from store to store grabbing anything I needed (Be it wood/foam from Home Depot, Track/Scenery stuff from the local hobby shop, or paint/wood strips from Michaels). Nothing too exciting other than my local hobby shop having a 20% off sale on all train-related items the day I went in.
The most important thing you'll need to do is get your baseboard properly set up. Most people use a plywood base, but in this case I just made a frame around a 2x2 sheet of insulation foam board and added some risers to hold the board in place. This technically makes the layout 25" x 25" but who's counting?
After the baseboard is all done I started scoping out how all the track would look in place. I made some altercations to the track layout while going from digital to reality but nothing too substantial.
