Abrams only signed on to do one Star Wars film because he was anxious to move onto other things because he had his own production company (Bad Robot) to take care of and was burned out on remakes/sequels after making Mission Impossible and two Star Treks in a row. There's was never ANY plans for Abrams to do more than one film, and so Johnson was working on the script for TLJ even before TFA had begun filming and Kennedy was looking for a writing/directing team to tackle Episode IX.
Trevorrow got canned after his first draft of the Episode IX script was received poorly, which also happened to coincide with his magic retard assassination movie getting panned into oblivion - it's not like Trevorrow was in a position to suddenly quit and it's not like Kennedy and Iger were pleading with him to stay like Ralphie's parents apologizing for blinding him with soap in A Christmas Story.
