There were sets with pieces that only serve one purpose for basically as long as minifigs, with time we forget the shittier old toys and only remember the good ones, often additionally idealizing them through nostalgia. There are problems with modern Lego, like heavy reliance of shit licenses which usually only lead to crap sets (TLBM was the only capeshit line with decent sets for example, imo), but this is not something new, and also hardly a problem, kids are meant to start with the simpliest stuff and gradually move to more complex builds - planes and ships with a few huge pieces like that are a middle ground, basically.
