Even if they made a figure that was created using their wholly original tooling, the "character" being sourced to a different company's toyline might give them second thoughts. And besides, if they did make it a wholly original design they'd risk fans not accepting it since a big point of their ST line was accuracy.
That said, Playmates now might just take the actual McFarlane molding considering just what a sideshow their Godzilla line launched as.
