McFarlane sets use those types of bricks too. How else can a truck that can pass for a tabletop miniature look like this despite being made up of 400 bricks?
LEGO uses more pre-fab giant MegaBlok-style pieces than McFarlane does.

I'm not sure how to do chubby cheeks, but the toes are very easy to add shit to the feet, considering ther are still peg holes down there for you to add onto it.

Also, McFarlane has a bunch of finishing pieces so you can create a smoother looking mech and they are all dry brushed/weathered already to make them blend into MegaBloks stuff.
