>>6553262The sails have raised "ribs" along the front, presumably corresponding to the seams between the bits of fabric that they were made up of. Having painted the sails in their overall colour first, I then masked to spray a slightly dark colour for largely onto the ribs. (The backs have corresponding grooves, which I just painted in by hand). The whole process probably isn't ideal, but the original plan was to just spray one colour, and then do an oil wash around the ribs instead. The detailing proved to be far too soft to take the wash properly though, and after some discussion here I also decided on dark seams instead of dark bordered ones.
One big ball of used masking tape later, I think I'll make a filter out of white and varnish and spray on a touch tomorrow, as the base tone ended up a bit too off white for my taste, and the contrast with the darker hue I've sprayed could stand to be dialled down a bit.
