I get exactly what you mean by Todd pushing the limits of dynamic posing by using specific and odd joint setups. It's what I liked in old Kaiyodo/Yamagchi trading figures, like the Devil May Cry or DoA ones. They all had very primitive joint setups, nothing more than simple swivels--but by cleverly choosing where and what angle to cut, they were able to achieve incredibly dynamic poses.
