They are gachapon toys and 2 things made them popular; first the cats were going to be sculpted by the #1 in the world best 1/12 scale gatcha cat sculptor, folded 1000 times in traditional ancient Japanese fashion or something (they are very nice) AND #2... each cat had a weird combat vehicle build that would combined as a set into a super vehicle. Kind of a 1/12 cat power rangers meets mad max junk yard mecha vibe. Japan is odd and wonderful at times. The big draw was the attachment points were compatible with bandi and other model kit makers & toys. There were some cool cat mech & vehicle custom builds shown here and on the other chans back then.
