The wide shoulders are due to how the blue panels need to stack on top of each other. If they were any thinner it would make them flimsy. The transformation on this thing is actually way better than the MP version, the thighs disappear completely in truck mode and he doesn't have a giant butt flap. If this SS figure had the same size as the MP one the wide shoulders would be reduced, as the stackable panels wouldn't need to be much more thicker for it to still work.
The shitty looking shoulder joint on the other hand really is due to that gimmick, but you can minimize how crap it looks be being decent at posing. Not that I didn't wish it looked better.
