Even if that wasn't metal painted up black, the point is that simple wire (metal, plastic, same difference) is superior to ugly knobby clear plastic stands.
As your ignorance shows, you can paint it just about any color you want to help it blend in.
Obviously, you can do the same with a plastic stand, but it's still going to be thicker to support the weight and it's not as versatile.
