>>6123368>>6123371 Okay, I gave the barrel a second pass and the bluing still didn't take in some parts. I'm thinking now that it's actually some residual solder that's preventing it from actually turning dark. Anyway, I went over it first with a little water based oil in burnt umber before then mixing up a dark gray to fill in the glaring spots. They kind of stuck out, being more a matte color but that's okay because the bulk of it was up near the muzzle and front sights where I had to do the soldering.
What I did from there was grind up some soft (HB/#2) pencil graphite with a file (sand paper will work fine for this as well, of course.) Took the stuff and brushed it on around the transitional area, rubbing just a little with my finger in spots. Graphite is another nice technique if you want a little hint of a dark metallic color. It's less shiny compared to the gun bluing, having a little more tooth to it but can help break up the monotone appearance of just coating everything with the same color/material.
Picking out some of the details of the barrel with the naked eye is really dependent on the lighting..
