Small scale ships are a fun topic, you can assemble and paint one with minimum skill and they will turn out just fine, yet high-skill shipfags can go balls to the wall and make them look impressive, that's what the upgrade set is for, don't worry about it now, really.
I assume you don't have an airbrush, be sure to get a nice flat brush and a detail one (artstores are your friends), and a can primer.
Don't thin your paints with water, use proper thinner.
If you can get your hands on some thin masking tape it will help you a lot too.
