You can't copyright every possible version of a character forever, so you have to make obvious variations to blanket-copy the concept.
Ok, there's a man from krypton who can fly and shoot lasers. But parody law exists, so if I wanted to make a movie about a flying laser alien fighting a bald man, I can, if I make it a woman. So now supergirl and robot armour black superman are added into the comics, and fuck it teenager with leather jacket also a clone superman and terminator superman too because why not. And also superman with a visor BUT VIOLENT. That's about all the versions possible in one storyline.
In the same way, marvel's recent stuff is not going woke it's just copyrighting. Now I can't just make a movie "iron man but black" or "thor but a woman" because legally it already exists and is copyrighted.
This is why every male superhero has a daughter instead of a son, it's just the easiest way to go "look lawyers, same powers but girl".
Otherwise DC and Marvel (and previously others) get into a giant pissing contest about who gets there first. Wonder woman? Bam wonder man. Too bad, the name's trademarked now.
