It's obvious that the people working on it genuinely care about the franchise, and while they aren't afraid to go in different directions with the characters and designs, you can tell that MOTU was the starting point, rather than trying to take something original and re-skin it with MOTU.
I also think it's the best version of Skeletor, he's intelligent and cunning enough to take him seriously as a thread, but the character himself is having such a good time with his new powers that it lets him have moments where he is goofy like the original.
I definitely recommend I, Skeletor if you feel like some light reading.
