It usually gives the audience an impression of increased scale.I think the key aspect of that definition is giving a sense of scale. Adding tons of smaller details works for huge objects, but for most transformers who are around 20ft and below its a mess and is just the designer taking one to many passes.
I don't mind detailing, especially at joints or places were armour meats, but random lines everywhere looks messy,
