Nevermind Dark Empire was PLANNED out. They didn't just make it up as they went along, thus didn't make the big baddy there were setting up from the very first movie a non-character and suddenly whip out the new baddy for the conclusion. So Dark Empire's story makes fucking sense, even if it wasn't that good.
