Hyde grows in power over Jekyll both mentally and physically over the course of the book and it reaches a point where Hyde appears without the need of the drug. In fact, Jekyll needed a serum to prevent Hyde from appearing. Stevenson made Hyde more mysterious by only hinting at his physical appearance.
