Hathaway had some very interesting character writing but it requires a lot of context. That's one of the issues with UC, it's fantastic but to get to the best it has to offer you need to go through the history to get the most out of it. Events in Char's Counterattack and Hathaway will be confusing and less impactful without watching the old toy commercials with rather absurd character writing.
I've even see people compare Gundam casts to Shakespeare in their unrealistic dramatic personalities, and it's not a bad comparison. If you don't find charm or appeal in that though the barrier of entry is huge. Most people either embrace it early on or only stick with the IP for the mobile suits instead of the characters.
