The molding is the most expensive part for making these toys and you can literally tell why they started to drop the paint apps, since toys like this were released just a few years ago.
The more pieces that the toy is made out of, the more it costs to mold the toy. Add assembly and it undoubtedly costs more than adding a wash and a few other paint apps.
