Basically the Chamber of Life stronghold hidden beneath the Southern Continent is so fortified that it bursts from the landmass during the cataclysm and ruptures out through the robot's chest where it floats to the surface of the ocean. This creates a waterfall that pours all the way from the chest cavity into the core of the universe. After drifting around for a while, lava flow from the volcano pouring down into the ocean eventually tethers Voya Nui to the robot below and Mahri Nui eventually breaks off from Voya Nui and sinks to the bottom of that cord.
