I've never liked the design philosophy of Western statues being super detailed and realistic looking. For all the shit Japanese statues get, they mainly try to look like the source material, with ones that drift from it being based on an iconic artist's style, or part of a series of redesigns meant to display nicely together.
No to say there aren't American statues based on specific artists, but the higher end seems focused on these ugly things. It just strikes me as very conscious and insecure.
