Ever since the 90s companies upgraded to better molding practices, so even the shittiest of companies can produce highly detailed sculpts, because it's an innate quality of injection molding.
A nobody company like McFarlane Toys came out of nowhere and was able to turn the entire industry on its head by taking a chance in putting more detail into their toys than the competition.
Companies like Playmates were doing the same in the 80s, but their stuff was cartoony, yet highly detailed. Nobody really took note because of the style, but it goes to show how cheap children's toy makers have had the ability to do this for a very long time.
