Even if the overall design of the toy wasn't intended to be cartoon accurate, Takara's versions typically had cleaner, more opaque colors and details like painted grills/wheels that made the figures look better just because they indicated more effort.
Funny you mention Triggerhappy in particularl, he was one figure where the better plastic quality and nicer paint apps made the LG version more than worth it for me.

I realized very quickly that I liked the Headmaster gimmick a lot and wanted the little bots to feel as much like actual figures as possible. Takara's versions helped out a lot with that, and it was particlularly fun on the later releases that also included a Targetmaster.
